PEMF: 9 Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy?

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), can also be referred to as :

  • Magneto Therapy

  • Low Field Magnetic Stimulation (LFMS)

  • HI Intensity PEMF

  • Electromagnetic Therapy

  • Static Magnetotherapy

Pulsed electromagnetic therapy is not the same as grounding (earthing), although they share a lot of similarities.

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) stimulation is imperceptible, yet the effects are very real.

We all know our bodies run on electricity. What we might not know is that that's only half true. Our bodies actually run on both electric and magnetic fields. They are actually inseparable. Electricity is made up of positive and negative charges. As these charges repel or attract one another they move about. Magnetic fields are a consequence of this motion caused by electricity. The inseparable product of electrical and magnetic fields is what we call electromagnetic energy.

Electromagnetic energy is a natural power source. The earth itself is a giant magnet. In addition to it's own magnetic field, the earth also has magnetic rock formations, geomagnetic storms, and natural electric currents that flow beneath the earth's surface. Life on our planet is sustained because of the pulsing electromagnetic field emitted from the earth. In fact, when shielded from the earth's electromagnetic fields, the body suffers and homeostasis is lost.

Our bodies work very similar to the way the earth works. Electromagnetic energy powers our entire body and our brains use electromagnetic signals to communicate with every system and every cell in our body. It has actually been proven that if our cells are given enough natural electromagnetic energy the body can and will heal itself completely.

On the inverse, when our internal magnetic fields cause disruption to the electrical fields in our bodies, they are thrown out of homeostasis and become prone to illness and invaders, aging accelerates, and our body's ability to heal and repair is decreased. Unfortunately this is a common problem due to man-made magnetic fields that interfere with our natural electromagnetic fields. Harmful electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are emitted from televisions, computers, Wi-Fi, power lines, microwaves, cell phones, tablets, and many other sources.

Harmful EMFs emit at frequencies that cause damage to our tissues and release free radicals in our bodies. Harmful EMFs are very different from therapeutic EMFs in PEMF.

All magnetic frequencies and waveforms will either amplify or diminish the body's natural signals. Harmful EMFs disrupt the body's natural signals and functions while therapeutic EMFs (like PEMF), supports and enhances the body's natural electromagnetic signals. The main differences between harmful and therapeutic EMF is:

  • Exposure time

  • Wavelength

  • Frequency

With PEMF, less is more. Instead of forcing our bodies to respond in rigid, specific ways, PEMF gently encourages the body to simply return to it's natural state. It works at low levels that gently encourage our neurons to change the timing of when they fire, stimulates the production of beneficial chemicals, and helps to detoxify our bodies from the harmful EMF we are constantly exposed to.

When a cell is healthy and well balanced it has the ability to ignore both EMF and PEMF signals and maintain its homeostasis.

What is Electrosmog?

All EMF affects the human body, and the human body is very easily affected by electromagnetic changes in our environment. EMF effects things like cell division and multiplication, growth regulation, and sleep cycles (to name a few). These affects can either be positive or negative, depending on the EMF's frequencies, waveform, and your exposure.

Health enhancing, therapeutic PEMF is emitted at an extremely low frequency (ELF) and have long waves, where harmful EMFs are emitted at an extremely high frequency with very short waves.

Sources of harmful, short wave, high frequency EMF include (but are not limited to):

  • Power lines

  • Cells Phones

  • Televisions

  • Tablets

  • Computers

  • Wi-Fi

  • Microwaves

  • Portable radios

  • Bluetooth

  • GPS devices

  • 5G and 6G

  • Routers

  • Smart Meters

  • Kitchen Appliances

  • Fluorescent Light Bulbs

  • "Dirty" Electricity

Multiple devices like those listed above, in a condensed area (like a city) cause something called"electrosmog". Electrosmog is equivalent to pollution, but instead of air or water pollution we are talking about the pollution of electric and magnetic fields.

Living in an environment contaminated with man-made electrosmog causes all sorts of health issues. Research concludes the most prominent affects on the human body include (but are not limited to):

  • Neurological and Neuropsychiatric issues

  • Endocrine (hormonal) problems

  • Oxidative stress & free radical damage

  • DNA mutation and/or destruction

  • Abnormally high cell death

  • Lower sex hormones production & mutated sperm

  • Excessive calcium production and signaling in cells

  • Direct attack on cells

The affects on the body listed above lead to all sorts of health issues, including (but not limited to):

  • Chronic Disease

  • Cancer

  • Infertility

  • Miscarriage

  • Neurodegenerative Disease

  • Cardiac Arrhythmia

  • Heart Attack

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Anxiety

  • Alzheimer's

  • Dementia

  • Depression

  • ADHD/ADD

  • Autism

  • Trouble Concentrating/Brain Fog/Memory Loss

  • Allergies

  • Asthma

  • Diabetes/ Blood Sugar Imbalances

  • Fatigue

  • headaches

  • Muscle & Joint Pain

  • Sleep Disturbance

In order to restore health and homeostasis in your body, it is best to minimizes/protect yourself from as much harmful EMF as possible and expose yourself to as much healing EMF (PEMF) as possible.

Does PEMF Really Work?

Electromagnetic therapy and it's affects on the human body have been studied for centuries. It is a very well established form of treatment that has been thoroughly investigated and documented down to the cellular level. Electromagnetic therapy is widely used and being studied by leaders in healthcare, including the Mayo Clinic, John Hopkins and the Cleveland Clinic.

Among many other findings, studies show that PEMF stimulates the production on nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels allowing an increase in blood flow to injured sites, flooding the area with oxygen and nutrients and expediting healing. Increased blood flow also reduces inflammation and swelling.

PEMF improves cellular charges and calcium flow, which relieves painful muscle spasms due to chronic pain and fibromyalgia.

PEMF stimulates cell growth and regeneration, accelerating healing.

PEMF also increases the body's production of adenosine triphosphate, which also aids in blood flow as well as muscle contraction and locomotion.

According to extensive research, PEMF has been shown to both prevent and/or reverse over 80 serious health conditions. Below are just the top ten benefits of PEMF therapy:

  • Pain Relief

  • Healthy Heart Function

  • Improved Circulation and Blood Flow

  • Improved Sleep

  • Improved Mental Focus, Concentration and Cognitive Function

  • Improved Muscle Performance

  • Reduction in Stress and Anxiety

  • Enhanced Healing, Repair and Recovery

  • Reduced Inflammation and Swelling

  • Cellular Restoration

Additional benefits include antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-parasitic benefits, detoxification, anti-aging benefits, nerve regeneration and improved conductivity, immunity boost, stem cell stimulation and so much more.

How does Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy Work?

Naturally magnetic loadstones have been used in Indian and Traditional Chinese Medicine as early as 4,000 BC. Since then electricity and magnetic fields have continued to be explored.

Through centuries of investigation we now know that the body works like a giant battery. The majority of our body fluid is made up of electrolytes, which are used to conduct electricity. The movement of electricity through our cells cause motion which produces our magnetic field. This movement is also where most of our chemical reactions take place. Like any battery, we are constantly producing current but also require recharging.

We have also learned that cells each oscillate at their own frequency, which can be changed by imposing outside forces. When specific electromagnetic frequencies are directed at cells it can redirect the oscillations and produce many beneficial effects.

When a magnetic field passes through the body is effects the body at the cellular level. This can cause each cell to change its oscillation, chemistry production and electrical patterns. In addition, the increased motion in ions and electrolytes can increase the available energy in each cell up to 500%.

Electromagnetic fields also affect the charge of the cell membrane. Every cell has a membrane, which acts like a gate keeper. This membrane opens and closes channels into the cell. Charging the cell membrane allows channels to open up allowing for better oxygen and nutrient flow and enhancing the cell's ability to eliminate carbon dioxide and other harmful waste.

As more cells are restored to health and balance they join with other similar cells, leading to tissue and organ repair, detoxification, healing and optimization.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy Benefits?

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy effects the body at the cellular level and works its way throughout the entire body. Benefits of PEMF therapy include (but are not limited to):

  • Chronic Pain Control

  • Inflammation Reduction

  • Fracture Healing

  • Low Back Pain Relief

  • Arthritis Reduction

  • Osteoporosis Reversal

  • Fibromyalgia Relief

  • Neck/Joint Pain Elimination

  • Stiffness Resolved

  • Musculoskeletal Injury Healing

  • Improved Blood Circulation

  • Reduced Swelling

  • Muscle Spasms Eliminated

  • Memory & Cognition Improved

  • Circadian Rhythms Restored

  • Reproductive Hormones Stabilized

  • Emotional & Mental Health Improved

How Quickly does PEMF Therapy Work?

This is determined by a number of factors.

  • Nature & severity of your health concern

  • Intensity of the PEMF therapy

  • Duration & frequency of treatment

Most patients note improvement within a few treatments, but this does not mean treatment should be discontinued at this point. It is suggested that treatments should continue for twice as long as it take to feel better. For example, if it takes 3 weeks to be pain free, treatment should go for a total of 6 weeks. Managing pain is not the same as healing the root cause. In order to keep the pain from returning you will want to heal to actual cause of the pain.

It is also suggested that treatments should be a minimum of 30 minutes and that they should be done as often as possible. While mild problems may resolve after just a few treatments, chronic conditions will generally require more time to heal.

Treatment plans regarding intensity, frequency and duration can be tailored to your specific health concern upon evaluation.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy Side Effects?

Side affects are rare, but can occur. The two most common side effects that occur are due to an increase in circulation and nerve cell healing.

Patients who have poor, or greatly reduced circulation may experience a sudden increase in circulation. While this is inherently a good thing, the sudden change from an inadequate blood flow to a healthy supply can cause some discomfort following PEMF therapy. In extreme cases this sudden restoration of circulation may cause oxidative stress in the tissues. It is best for patients who wish to improve poor circulation to have adequate antioxidant support prior to treatment. Discomfort will be temporary and proceeding with PEMF treatment is encouraged, as it will continue to improve the circulation.

Increased circulation in ischemic patients can also appear in the skin as a rash or hives. Again, this is proof that the circulation and blood flow is improving, but it may be uncomfortable while the body adjusts.

In similar fashion, when a damaged nerve is suddenly stimulated and brought back to life, the patient may experience some discomfort. As the nerve experiences increased traffic signals a patient's condition may appear to be "aggravated" temporarily. In truth, the treatment is working and healing the problem, but there could be some discomfort in the beginning stage as the nerve begins to feel and work again.

While these are the two most common type of adverse reactions, they are rare to experience.

Who Should Not Use PEMF Therapy?

Individuals who have implanted electrical devices should not use PEMF. Since these devices use electromagnetic fields themselves, PEMF could shut the device down.

If you have any of the following devices you should NOT use PEMF:

  • Pacemaker

  • Cochlear Implant

  • Intrathecl Pump

In addition, if you have been told you cannot use an MRI do to an implanted device, you should not use PEMF therapy.

Patients who have the following conditions should also avoid PEMF therapy:

  • Organ transplant

  • Pregnant

  • Grave's Disease

  • Actively Bleeding

  • Breast Implants

You should NOT undergo high-intensity PEMF if you have any of the following metal implants:

  • Joint replacement

  • Dental implant

  • Mechanical Heart Valve

  • Metal Stents

  • Metal Staples in Blood Vessels or Intestines

Most metal implants are biologically inert, as opposed to ferrous metals which can be affected more by PEMF. The affects of PEMF on the metals is not due to risk of injury or harm, but because because extremely high-intensity PEMFs may stimulate the nerves in the area of the metal, causing sharp pain.

How Much Does PEMF Therapy Cost?

Cost of PEMF therapy varies based on several factors, such as geographic location, individual administering the treatment, location of treatment (facility vs office), etc. The running average in the USA is between $30-$60 per. 30 minute session.

Due to the nature of PEMF therapy, it is recommended to start out at a low level of therapy and gradually increase the level over several treatments. At Therapy Pros we offer up to nine levels of PEMF treatment. Since it will take multiple sessions to reach the higher levels of therapy we offer a starter package deal.

First Three PEMF Sessions: $100

Each Additional Session: $36
